What is scary about liberal progressives

I was having a conversation with my "liberal progressive" friend. We were talking about the situation some European social democracies seem to going through du to the economic downturn (or crisis for dramatization). He immediately said that many of the things I was saying were opinion due to the fact that I was getting them from the general media, S&P, and barclays about the situation. I then gave him a link to a website from Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (www.oecd.org). He then replied that all the statistics I was giving him about Greece's government were still opinion, because OECD 2010 forum was being sponsored by a number of multinational companies. This obsessant pulling and reaching for straw men is what makes these people so dangerous. It blurs the line of fact from fiction, lies from truth, and fact from opinion. My thinking is that he got the link, went to the website, and then searched for something to discredit, which he presented in the form of a forum titled Road to Recovery: Innovation, Jobs, and Clean Growth. Held in May of this year. I wonder why would he want to discredit what I was saying with such a falsehood.
